I was in the market for a cordless mower and decided on the newly released Earthwise 20 inch 40 Volt Lithium-Ion Cordless Electric Lawn Mower. The previous model used a 20 volt lead-acid battery which is heavy and requires routine maintenance to function properly. This new model uses an innovative approach with dual 40 volt light weight lithium-ion batteries mounted on the mower. When the power from one battery is exhausted, it automatically switches to the other battery. After using the mower I am quite impressed with the performance.
The Earthwise 20 Inch Cordless Mower offers 3-in1 functionality, with side discharge, mulching or bagged clippings. It also has a steel deck and single lever cutting height adjuster. The two batteries are sealed 40 volt Lithium Ion with fuel gauge. One battery is 4 amp-hour and the other is 2 amp-hour. To conserve power, the engine automatically senses the load and will adjust the speed. The controls requires a key, button and lever to start the electric engine. The run time on the batteries is approximately 45 minutes.
The main negative is the long recharge time for the batteries. The 2 amp-hour battery requires 1 hour and the 4 amp-hour battery requires 2 hours to charge. I would have also preferred both batteries being the larger 4 amp-hour battery. However, the dual lithium-ion battery setup is a great feature and is perfect for yards ¼ acre or less. Highly recommended!
Pros: Powerful, Cuts Well, Easy to Use, Good Size & Weight
Lawn Mowing Bliss….
June 20, 2015
Finally someone built the electric mower I’ve been waiting for ! I’ve owned two electric mowers previously and both had some major compromises that made them less than desirable. The corded one was light and easy to push but the cord was always a hassle to deal with each time I had to mow. Where I live it’s about once a week in the Summer. I also had a cordless one with a lead acid battery and that beast weighed over 90 lbs. Couldn’t push it up hills easily and it was just too much of a workout, especially on hot days. I’ve got about a third of an acre to cut.
Now this Lithium model solves both problems, it’s just over 50 lbs. has plenty of power and no cord to deal with. It’s much quieter than the other two I previously used and is made out of steel, unlike some other Lithium Ion mowers. On a cool day with some clouds I won’t even break a sweat while mowing the lawn and can hear the birds singing in approval of my new quiet Lithium Ion mower. So if you’ve got a small yard and need to mow frequently this is the one to get. Set at medium level and in mulching mode it’s still easy to push. You can also bag or shoot the grass out the side if you need to. I’m happy I sold my two older mowers and now just have this to get the job done. Good job Earthwise !
I’ve got Lithium Ion batteries in my electric shaver, my cell phone and my laptop so why not in my mower too ? I like the fact that they recharge quickly, are easy to recycle and won’t break the bank when I need to replace them in 4-5 years. Oh and the gas saving over the years of ownership of this is a big plus. The only draw back is that you may not get that perfect golf course short cut that some of the more expensive gas mowers can give. I’m happy being just short of perfection though to save money and to pollute the environment less as well as my own lungs. So if you are still using gas give one of these a try and you won’t be disappointed.
